Every woman should have a wig for those quick-fix emergencies on bad hair days. If you don’t have a wig and are looking for one, choosing the right one could be tricky. You do not want it to look so different from your natural hair; it should look as real as possible

Before you get one, consider the following:

Texture: This is determined by the type of hair that you want. The best wigs use human hair. The more realistic the wig, however, the more it costs. If you cannot afford a human hair wig, there are also many quality synthetic wigs available and they can look as good as the real hair. Human hair comes in straight, wavy, kinky or even curly. Straight human hair comes in silky or yaki.

Silky is smooth and shiny hair while yaki is coarser. Remy hair is another texture that is of high quality because its cuticles go in one direction. There is Brazilian Remy, Chinese Remy and Indian Remy, among others. Then there is versatile hair that can be worn both straight and curly. Virgin hair, on the other hand, is neither coloured nor chemically treated and only comes in natural black or natural brown.

Tone: It is important to pick the right colour of wig. As you choose, consider whether it is a wig for the office or for your casual days. I would recommend that you go for your natural hair colour shade, a shade lighter, or a shade darker.

Length: The length of your wig will be determined by where you want it to fall on your body. If you want a bob style, go for ten inches. Eight inches is ideal for a short cut. If you have a picture of the wig that you want, carry it with you to the shop.

Appearance: The wig you choose should be realistic and look good on you regardless of its quality. It must also be of a colour that suits your skin complexion. Always try on the wig to determine whether the style flatters your look. You could toss and turn your head to see if wig’s appearance remains natural around the edges and scalp. The style you choose affects how realistic your wig appears. If the wig is too tight or itches, get your right size or opt for another one respectively.

Maintenance: Once you choose the wig, go to your stylist to guide you on how to care for it at home. Your hairdresser may also trim and shape the wig for the most natural look. You should also read through the manufacturer’s instructions on how to care for the wig. Wash, condition and style the wig using products that are specifically recommended for wigs.
