600 bodas to get jobs in Qatar, says MP

NEWS

In a County with more than 55,000 boda boda riders, the fight for customers leaves the operators struggling to raise money to repay bank and Sacco loans they took to procure the motorbikes.

Kisii town alone has more than 6,000 operators.

Nyaribari Chache MP Zaheer Jhanda, whose constituency serves nearly 60 percent of Kisii town, plans to sponsor 600 youth to travel and work as bike operators in Qatar.

According to Zaheer, courier services is a big industry in Qatar that has employed thousands of youth through e-commerce.

The MP targets 600 youth, 100 from each of the six Wards, seeking job opportunities. "I will sponsor some staff from the NCDF office who will accompany the first group of 20 at the end of this week."

He added:"I was in Qatar, had a study on the industry, and I can confirm that Courier Service on that side works perfectly. I have few friends operating such companies, and we have partnered to ensure we get to offer our people some job opportunities."

"We acknowledge what our boda boda riders are doing here in Kenya, particularly in the rural setup where we have several poor roads. Going to Qatar as riders will offer our youths more job opportunities."

The MP says that Kenya has had diminishing formal job openings, hence the need to look into ways and means of aiding the unemployed youth.

"The fact is that the Country cannot absorb all our youths into formal employment. We have graduates who are languishing at home. The case of diminishing land in Kisii makes matters worse for our people."

Interested riders were required to have a photocopy of their Curriculum Vitae, passport, driving license, and a certificate of Good Conduct.
