The Nairobian Defender received a complaint from a young mother who frequents Ruiru sub-county hospital in Kiambu County.She expressed concerns with the state of latrines at the Level 4 facility."The latrines are in despicable condition. Ever emitting a bad smell and sometimes messed up such that one cannot step in because of muck strewn all over," she told the Defender desk."Patients and workers are at high risk of contracting diseases. They should be fixed immediately. In this day and age, a hospital of Level 4 status should not have latrines. The county government should build ones that can flash and be kept neat," she added.The Defender team visited the facility and established that the latrines are indeed in a disgusting state. Some patients opt to walk to nearby buildings, hotels, and pubs to relieve themselves then walk back to the hospital to wait for services. A staff member admitted that the latrines are an eyesore. "The hospital has received a multi-million shillings upgrade but on sanitation, we have failed. Kindly highlight the matter".
Steps taken by the Defender deskWe forwarded the complaint to Governor Kimani Wamatangi and the county Department of Health Services to look into the issue. As we wait for their response or action, a case file on the matter is now open.
