Interior CS Kithure Kindiki on Friday, March 10, 2023, instructed the DCI to investigate the death of Jeff Mwathi, a 23-year-old interior designer, who died at the residential apartment of Kikuyu entertainer Lawrence Njuguna alias DJ Fatxo.
Kindiki called for a speedy process to get to the bottom of the matter following claims of collusion that threatened to jeopardise investigations.
"On the matter of the late Jeff Mwathi, I have spoken to the DCI Mr. Amin this morning and instructed him to send a homicide team from the DCI headquarters to thoroughly investigate the incident and take the necessary action.
"I thank the DCI for his quick action on this matter. The homicide team from the DCI headquarters is dispassionate, and this will help resolve the claims of collusion at Kasarani Police Station where the matter was reported," he said.
DCI promptly issued a statement a few minutes later confirming that detectives from the Homicide Department had taken over the matter and assured the public that those responsible for Mwathi's death will be brought to book.
"The public is assured that no stone shall be left unturned in the investigation of this case and any person found to have been involved in the death shall face the full force of the law.
"Meanwhile, anyone with information that may assist us in this case is asked to volunteer it to the head of Homicide at DCI headquarters or call our toll free number 0800 722 203," wrote the DCI.
Prior to his demise, Mwathi met up with DJ Fatxo on February 21, 2023, to discuss an interior design job and had informed his mother of the same.
Through WhatsApp voice notes, he asked his mum to send him Sh200 to facilitate his movement and promised to send photos once he met up with the musician.
"Mum, please send me KSh 200, I have just talked with DJ Fatxo, and we are meeting at Ruiru, but I don't have any money. I look really good, and I will make sure to take a photo with him and I will send you so that you can see," he said.
In another voice note he confirmed they had met and had agreed to begin the interior design work the following day.
They (Mwathi and Fatxo) later went out for drinks and were seen returning to DJ's apartment located along Thika Road at around 3am, in the company of three ladies.
It is reported that Fatxo and the three ladies left the premise, leaving Mwathi in the house with two other men.
CCTV footage showed two men scanning the parking lot area and a few moments later, Mwathi fell from the 10th floor of the building.
His family maintains he did not jump to his death and have called on police to unravel the truth.
