Residents of Umoja estate in Nairobi have decried the high rate at which shoes are being stolen inside their residential plots. Reports indicate that the thugs specifically target school shoes which are then sold to second hand dealers at throwaway prices.
Damaris Wanjiru, a victim, told this writer that she woke up in the morning and found all the shoes she had left outside her door had vanished. This left her with a huge loss since she had to buy new ones. Since that day she learnt to keep the shoes inside the house rather than leaving them at the door.
"Those thieves who stole my children's shoes really drove me back financially because I had to borrow the money to buy new ones" laments Wanjiru.Jacinta Adhiambo is the latest victim who also lost all her children's shoes to the thieves. She had washed and cleaned them and placed them at the uncompleted roof of her residence for drying only to find them missing come morning. What is interesting was that only the school shoes went missing while other shoes were intact.Stephen Ruga also shares similar experiences of losing shoes at the door.
