Deputy President William Ruto and Rachel Ruto have been married for close to 31 years now and their love story dates way back.
In a past interview with Daniel Ndambuki, Ruto narrated how he met Rachel while in campus and how their relationship went from strength to strength.
At the time, he was a student at the University of Nairobi studying BSc Botany and Zoology while Rachel was taking Education at Kenyatta University.
“She (Rachel) was a member of the choir like me. We were both part of an evangelistic team called North Rift Evangelistic Team.
“We used to go on missions together…During teaching practice she was posted to Kessup Girls and I was generally around,” said Ruto.
He once shared details of their humble beginnings and starting out in a Sh1,750 house in Ngando, Dagoretti South, where he says Nick Ruto was born.
Describing Rachel as ‘an angel’, Ruto has often heaped praises on his better half for supporting him throughout his political life, especially during the trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Church donations
In March this year, Rachel jumped to the defense of her husband’s generous nature saying his donations to churches should not be used to pull him down.
Addressing a women’s group at Emali Market in Kibwezi West Constituency, Rachel said Ruto’s habit of giving started way back, describing him as a selfless being.
“His habit of donating to churches is not something he started today.
“Let people not be bothered by his generosity. Yeye atapeana, atapeana, atapeana, hata mpaka hatakuwa nayo,” she said.
Adding: “The Bible says that the hand that gives, is the one that receives. What’s the secret of being blessed?” she posed.
