Sly code: Best cheats in video game history

Gamers love using cheats and exploits to unlock extra abilities, weapon upgrades, and sometimes just plain funny game animations.

The most basic type of cheat code is one created by the game designers and hidden within the video game itself, which will cause any type of uncommon effect that is not part of the usual game mechanics. They are usually activated by typing secret passwords or pressing controller buttons in a certain sequence.

Nowadays, cheat codes are not as popular as they used to be. A while back, we had TV shows as well as websites that were dedicated solely to sharing these commands, codes and tactics that would change the way one played.

These are some of the absolute best cheats in video game history.

Grand Theft Auto - Spawn a Rhino Tank and the Cell Phone Code

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) is one of the games that have lots of cheat codes. The one that stands out is the ‘tank’ code in GTA 3. By entering Circle, Circle, Circle, Circle, Circle, Circle, R1, L2, L1, Triangle, Circle, Triangle (in the PS2 version of the game), GTA 3 players could spawn an invincible Rhino tank that could destroy any other vehicle with one cannon shot.

While at it, players of GTA 5 on Xbox and PlayStation can enter codes on the in-game cell phone. There are many cell phone codes you can use in the game. For example, if you type in 1-999-Sky-fall, your player character falls down the map in a free-fall motion.

Sonic the Hedgehog – The Debug Cheat

Although this mode is pretty common in PC games, Sonic the Hedgehog allows you to not only spawn items but also manipulate certain elements of existing levels.

Once you have selected a level, tap the top left hand corner where the time, ring and score counter is displayed - this will then change your character into a ring.

To search through all available objects tap the plus and minus icon at the top of the screen and to place the object, tap jump and the object will appear on the level.

The Sims – ‘Rosebud’ Money Cheat

With more money comes more fun and stability, and that is exactly what this mode does. This cheat allows one to have loads of money. The premise of this video game is simple: you have to live a life through your Sims, and as in real life, it is hard to save money every month.

To activate this mode you press Control + Shift + C + typing ‘rosebud’. The code gives you one thousand simoleons (game’s fictitious currency).

For each “!;” you add after the code, an extra 1,000 will magically appear in your family’s account. Typing in ‘motherload’ does the same thing but gives you 50,000 simoleons.

The Legend of Zelda – The Second Quest Secret

This trick allows you to unlock Zelda’s ‘Second Quest’. If a user types in ZELDA in the name registration screen the game starts on the second quest immediately, completely skipping the first quest.

In The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, the same procedure only changes the music of the registration screen.

Mortal Kombat (Sega Genesis) – The Blood Code

Typing in A B A C A B B would make characters bleed red blood when punched.
