Here's how often you should be washing your hair with shampoo

A hairdresser has said many people are actually washing their hair too often - and warned you could be doing more harm than good. Julien Farel, the founder of Julien Farel Restore Salon & Spa in New York, said although everyone's hair will have different needs, there's no logic in washing it every day.

The stylist advised against using shampoo on a daily basis as it can actually have adverse results, telling GQ: "If you shampoo every day, it will strip your scalp of all its natural oils and can lead to dry, brittle hair."

Instead, he said you should only be breaking out the shampoo two or three times a week at the most. He said his client's hair becomes far less greasy when they shampoo less often as the head produces sebum (natural oils) that help to keep hair healthy and soft.

Simply running your hair under water is enough to remove any excess oil in Julien's experience, but using shampoo too often will completely them strip away, leaving your hair worse off. He added the only exception to the rule is people who have an oily scalp, saying if your hair is thick with oil by 5pm in the evening you may need to shampoo more often to balance the levels.

Even if you've been grinding in the gym with a head full of sweat, Julien says a simple rinse without product is still enough to adequately wash your locks - arguing the salt from sweat may even give your hair a nice texture. And the theory has been backed up by many other hair professionals, including Pantene expert hairstylist Barney Martin.

Barney argued that even those with naturally greasy and fine hair shouldn't be washing it every day - with her only exception to the rule being swimmers. So put the shampoo down.
