The military will establish an independent university if Parliament approves a plan by Ministry of Defence. Yesterday, Defense Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma pleaded with the National Assembly Education Committee to allow changes to the Education Act to allow for setting up of the institution to provide certification to specialised officers.

The university, to be known as the National Defence University of Kenya (NDU-K) will also cater for personnel from the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and those from neighbouring countries. According to the CS, the Government has been spending large sums to pay for accreditation of its officers by public universities after undergoing training at various security colleges.
"The KDF and NIS operates colleges for its personnel to enable them deliver on their mandate. It was, however, observed that some of the defence forces colleges provide courses not certified by an accredited training institution,” she said. The university will have affiliate colleges, comprising already existing security training within KDF and NIS. Mogotio MP, Daniel Tuitoek questioned the readiness of affiliate institutions to support the university.

“A university is a universal entity. A college cannot become part of a bigger university if its does not have qualified personnel and infrastructure,’ said the MP.
