A 23-year-old university student is the new Miss Earth Kenya. Fridah Kariuki, a journalism student at the Kenya Methodist University was crowned during a virtual ceremony after beating nine other finalists. She takes over from Susan Kirui.

"I now have a platform nationally and internationally to create awareness and make a positive impact on environment issues,” Kariuki, a former Miss University crown holder and Miss Tourism Kenya Embu County title holder said. The beauty queen will represent Kenya in Miss Earth World pageant to be held in Philippines on November 29.
“Towards the big day, I have a number of shoots in various destinations in Kenya. I am being trained by Sarah Pkyach of Miss Tourism Kenya 2018,” said Kariuki , a final year student at the Kenya Methodist University. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, most international beauty pageants had been postponed. Meanwhile, Black girls continue to make a mark in international beauty circles.

Last year, for the first time in the history of beauty pageants, all five major title holders- Miss Universe, Miss America, Miss World, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA were Black women. For years, these major pageants have been predominantly a white women affair with black beauties labelled 'non-influential’. The Miss Earth Pageant is an international environmental event that acts as an effective tool to promote environmental awareness in the beauty industry.
