Social media star dies after ex allegedly set her on fire during livestream

A Chinese social media star has died after she was allegedly doused in petrol and set on fire by her ex-husband. Vlogger Lamu was reportedly streaming live when the horrific attack took place last month. It's alleged that her former partner broke into her home armed with a cleaver and petrol before attacking her in front of her family members. She sustained burns to 90% of her body and was left fighting for her life for more than two weeks before doctors pronounced her dead last night. It's reported that police have detained Lamu's former husband, but that his motives are not yet known.

Some reports in the Chinese media say he was seeking revenge after she initiated their divorce over domestic violence. Police are yet to comment on the claims. The former couple shared two young sons. Lamu had a massive following of more than 782,000 people and 6.3 million 'likes' on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. She was a popular Tibetan blogger and lived in the mountainous area of Aba in western China's Sichuan Province. Lamu's last video, posted on September 14, saw her performing a traditional Tibetan song as she sent well-wishes to her fans.

Later that day, her regular live broadcast is said to have suddenly cut to a black screen before her fans heard screaming, Beijing Youth Daily reports. Her account was silent for two days, until her sister, Zhuoma, posted about the attack. She made a desperate plea for financial help, asking the public to help save Lamu. It's said she was streaming live when the attack took place Around one million yuan (£114,038) was donated to the family.

Doctors tragically declared Lamu dead at around 9 pm on Wednesday after treatment to save her failed, a police statement said. Police identified Lamu by her surname A and said that she was assaulted by her ex-husband, named as Tang, at around 8.50 pm on September 14. She was taken to the People's Hospital in the Aba Prefecture and later transferred to the People's Hospital of the Sichuan Hospital on September 17. Police say that have detained Tang on suspicion of intentional homicide. They are carrying on with their investigation.
