TV reporter Kimani Mbugua has sparked controversy after branding the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church as a cult.

In a scathing Facebook video filmed in a car, Mbugua denounced the church that he claimed to have been a member of for over 20 years and rubbished one of its founders, Ellen White, as a “Philosophical Fraud”.

“I was born and raised SDA and now I know that SDA is not a church, [it] is a cult. Hear me out as someone born and raised that way, this is the only thing I have known for about twenty years of my life,” said Mbugua.

Mbugua explained that he was not making the wild statements out of ignorance but was willing to engage constructively on the issue.

“There was a path for me and I followed it diligently. And I am not saying these things from a point of ignorance, I have read every book and I am willing to sit down with anyone with an open mind,” added Mbugua.

In his rant, the Broken News host on Citizen TV reiterated his stance on why he had made the bold move including his alleged ordination at the age of 16.

“A lot of people who went to [school] with me knew me as that guy they did not want to hang around because I was so anti-everything. I was anti- hugging, anti-sex, I even found it hard to imagine that I would have a wife one day and have sex with her,” he went on.

For some who came out guns blazing in the comment section, however, the subject was taboo.

"This is so unfortunate. I sympathize with this gentleman. If you have raised an Adventist then you know prayer. We need it now more than ever. I am a Roman Catholic but it’s very irresponsible, demeaning and out of taste for Citizen’s Kimani Mbugua to call Seventh-Day Adventist a cult. A cult is a social group with unusual religious or philosophical or spiritual beliefs. Rather false or extreme beliefs,” added Stella Andagalu.

Others, infuriated, hurled all manner of insults at Mbugua, from accusations of demonic possession to demanding that he pulls down the controversial post.

"This fellow is out to taint the name of the church. Unfortunately, his is cheap publicity. No need to confront him,” shared Joseph Mochere.

Eunice Ngari on her part stated, “Kimani you cannot tarnish God's church, this way. My son, I do not know you but, God is not a man you may end up a mad man, if you don't repent. God is watching you. I'm praying to my God to forgive you.”

While Eric Omwanza added, “Bro, I listened patiently to hear you tell what makes you conclude that the SDA church is a cult but all you said is you have read and concluded. Can you break down the evidence, please? Secondly, did you say you were ordained as an elder at Karura while in high school? That's a little surprising- please elaborate.”
