Doctor Sleep is an adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 novel and a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film The Shining. Still scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace.
But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extra-sensory ‘shine’. Instinctively recognising that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers,
The True Knot, who feed off the ‘shine’ of innocents in their quest for immortality.
Thumbs up
Ewan McGregor as an adult Danny Torrance is great and Rebecca Ferguson captivates as Rose the Hat. The film sets a great tone with stunning visuals and the score completely grabs you.
There’s practically no gore here and no cheap jump scares. What you’ll get though is expert film-making from someone you can tell really loves the source material he’s pulling it all in from. Everything strikes a balance.
Thumbs down
It’s hard to shake off the in-your-face movie about learning to deal with your own fears, traumas and even issues inherited or caused by one’s family, rather than a horror movie that will leave you puzzled.
Every single horror element is fully explained, every mystery revealed and every (simple) analogy spelled out for you; nothing is left to the imagination.
Verdict
Without a doubt, Doctor Sleep shines.
