Award-winning Kenyan film director Wanuri Kahiu has joined Kenyan sensation Lupita Nyong’o in Hollywood for a big role in the cinema industry.
The 39-year-old film maker is popular for her movie Rafiki, which received condemnation from the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) which accused her of sponsoring dirty content.

The controversial film placed Wanuri in the limelight in 2018 after she became the first Kenyan filmmaker to premiere a movie at the Cannes Film Festival.
Wanuri is also the director of other films including From A Whisper, Pumzi, Homecoming and Who Am I.
The film seemed to support same-sex relationships, a matter that Kenya’s moral cop, as KFCB CEO Ezekiel Mutua is popularly known, was not pleased with. He called for the ban of the film.
But now Wanuri has made big strides after she was selected to direct the film The Black kids, an adaptation from the novel by Christina Hammonds set to be released later in the year.

The film presents a story revolving around a wealthy black teenager struggling after his family gets involved in the Rodney King riots. She is also expected to direct HBO’s pilot Shade, a production of Oprah Winfrey, the American talk show host.
The film director will be working alongside world known producers and writers, including the celebrated Allison Davis.
