Former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale is in mourning.

Khalwale's wife Adelaide Shikanga died of pulmonary hypertension today, October 5, at their Malinya home in Ikolomani sub-county.

According to Khalwale, Shikanga, his wife of 39 years, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2003 and fully recovered but succumbed to pulmonary hypertension today.

"For the avoidance of doubt, I wish to announce to members of my extended family, our friends and relatives that Adelaide is dead. Adelaide was my wife of 39 years," said Khalwale.

"She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2003 and we as a family refused to be intimidated by the possibility of death. We have remained unbowed but she, unfortunately, died this morning ironically not from cancer.

"We fought the cancer she was diagnosed with in 2003 and she recovered.  This year, however, she developed cancer of the blood and we started her on standard treatment and confirmed she had been cured this week.

"She again developed pulmonary hypertension two days ago and stopped breathing after taking medication,” he went on.

On Facebook, the former Ikolomani added,  “A sad morning. Death just robbed my first wife” to thousands of reactions as Kenyans condoled with his family.

Condoling with Khalwale's family, various leaders including Deputy President William Ruto tweeted;

“Condolences to the family and friends of Hon. Boni Khalwale for the loss of your wife, Adelaide. Mama Adelaide was a pillar in your life, generous and kind. Thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones. Rest in Peace,” tweeted Ruto.

“My heartfelt condolences to my brother Bonny Khalwale and his family following the loss of his first wife. May the good Lord rest her soul in eternal peace. Amen!!” Added Moses Wetangula.
