One of Kenya’s pioneer rappers Chris Kantai is dead, a representative from his family, Wanjiku Thuku has confirmed.
According to Wanjiku, Kantai passed away on the morning of February 27 at St. Francis Hospital in Kasarani.
Kantai, who made waves in the Kenyan rap scene with Huu Ni Nani had been admitted at the facility for two days.
Even though his cause of death is yet to be established, the rapper has been battling alcoholism for a while now.
Battling addiction
After making a comeback with the Ting Badi Malo hit alongside Khaligraph Jones in 2016, Pulse reported that Kantai sunk back into alcoholism.

At one time, the rapper, who lived in a flat in South B shopping centre was caught lying by the roadside, intoxicated.
The previous day, he had tried to sell his bed sheets to one of his neighbours at Sh100 but he declined, instead offering to buy Kantai breakfast but the rapper asked to be bought for liquor.
Following the incident, a relative came for Kantai and there were plans to take him to rehab.
Kantai is credited for introducing Norweigian-based Kenyan rapper STL in the game with the “Happy” collaboration.
