Police are probing an incident in which a woman allegedly killed her expectant co-wife following a feud.

Mercy Cheyech, 23, who was eight months pregnant, is alleged to have been hacked to death by her co-wife Goreti Ayabei at Kibendo village, Keiyo North Sub-county on Saturday night.

Assistant chief Paul Kipyego said the suspect walked for about four kilometres from her home to her mother-in-law’s house where Cheyech lived.

Neighbours who responded to the commotion found the co-wife seriously injured and bleeding.

Mr Kipyego said Cheyech, who hailed from neighbouring West Pokot County, died at the Iten County Referral Hospital where she was rushed to after the 8pm incident.

Ms Ayabei, 28, allegedly hacked Ms Cheyech on the neck multiple times using a machete.

Ayabei, a mother of four, was arrested as she attempted to flee the scene. She is being held at Tambach Police station.

Her husband Penix Korir, 30, took Cheyech as his second wife last month. She had been living in his mother’s house.

The killing sparked fear in Kibendo after Cheyech’s relatives and elders from Pokot South showed up and demanded Sh100,000.

They said the money would be used to calm youth who were planning to avenge the killing
