The Inspector General of Police is demanding answers on who authorised heavy police escort for self-proclaimed prophet, David Owuor.

Videos of Owuor’s entourage escorted by the police went viral over the weekend, prompting IG Boinnet’s action.

Four police cars were impounded for taking part in Owuor’s convoy and investigation launched on the heavy deployment.

The vehicles were detained in Nakuru after Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet vowed to take action against police commanders who assigned eight police cars to Owuor.

The law allows Kenyans to hire police services. But Boinnet said the massive deployment amounted to misuse of public funds.

“I am assuring you that action is being taken. Misuse of public resources is not permitted in law,” said Boinnet.

The video of Owuor’s arrival in Nakuru showed eight police vehicles and two motorcycle outriders accompanying a convoy of more than 40 luxury cars.

Some of the police cars were not from Nakuru and were held for being outside their areas of jurisdiction without proper documentation.

“Let the drivers pray but we have detained the vehicles as part of investigations into the drama witnessed,” said an officer aware of the issue.

Owuor’s followers braved heavy afternoon downpour to welcome him to Nakuru.

Traffic in the town came to a standstill and a number of streets closed to make way for Owuor’s  convoy.

Owuor’s crusade was held at the Menengai Grounds between December 29 and 31.
