The year 2018 presented a cocktail of court cases; some shocking and harrowing, others just stupidly funny.

There is no doubt that the year did not disappoint as far as matters corridors of justice are concerned. In this issue, The Nairobian looks at some of the hot cases of the year, most of which will make your hair stand. 

 Threesome sex demands that made old mzungu get divorced

A 27-year-old woman could not have had a better 2018 after the High Court in Mombasa granted her wish to end her marriage to a 78-year-old mzungu.

Apparently, the old man decided to introduce a third party in their matrimonial bed for threesome sex.

The court heard that when her husband was served with divorce papers, he fled to England. The court ruled in favour of the woman, only identified as NM.

 Pastor accused of raping worshiper with candle trick

In yet another shocking case of 2018, a man of cloth found himself in the dock for allegedly using candles to lure a woman into sex. Police said the accused, John Owuor Oduor, who refers to himself as a ‘prophet,’ used candles on a woman’s private parts before raping her.

The offence is alleged to have been committed inside his church, Gift Church of Israel, on November 9.

The woman claimed that since she was a new member joining the church, she was told that was the first step of cleansing her to join the church.

According to the prosecution, Oduor claimed he had been directed by the Holy Spirit and that the complainant was facing a lot of problems including frequent fatigue.

For this reason, he is said to have asked her to buy four packets of black and white candles, and four pieces of red and black clothes that were to be used during prayers. He is alleged to have then proceeded to commit the offence. Odour was released on Sh300, 000 pending hearing on 11th February.

Clinician who ‘treated’ sick woman using kuni at his house

In an almost similar case, a clinician, Daniel Kutere, was charged with raping a patient at his house on September 14.

Kutere is alleged to have invited the sick woman to his house to ‘collect some drugs’, but raped her instead. The accused denied the charges and was set free on Sh300, 000 bail pending hearing on January 24.

Baby in a laptop bag

Mercy Atieno Ochieng, 30, was allegedly busted with a stolen baby tucked inside a laptop bag on August 31.

The baby’s mother, Rebecca Kasya Ayiro, had stepped out, leaving her baby unattended in the ward late in the evening.

A guard at the gate reportedly heard the baby crying in Atieno’s bag. The accused is said to have claimed it was her phone ringing. She was released on Sh200, 000 cash bail or Sh300, 000 surety bond.

 60-year-old mzee who killed young man over woman

In love matters, a 60-year old man was jailed after he was found guilty of a killing 28-year-old man over a woman.

Kalungasha Sena was found guilty of murder by a magistrate’s court in Narok and sentenced to death.

Did Guka defile minor in his house?

A 70-year-old man identified as Samuel Maina Kibugi was accused of defiling a minor in his house in Industrial Area on June 9, before bribing her with Sh40.

Kibugi who was also charged with committing an indecent act with a child denied charges. He was released on a Sh300, 000 bond.

 Woman stabbed ex because of dry spell

There was the case of Doreen Nkatha, who was charged with stabbing her ex-boyfriend Stephen Kajauri, after disagreement over sex on May 20.

The two are said to have met at a club and had some drinks when lady decided kurudisha mkono at her house. But when the man turned down the offer, she was allegedly irked and stabbed him.

She denied the charges and was set free on Sh100, 000 cash bail.

 Ngara Mboch fed employer’s child with vomit

In Ngara area, Cecile Ngumbo, a house help, was allegedly captured on camera feeding her employer’s 15-month old baby with vomit.

She denied the cruelty to a child charges said to have been committed on March 14.

She pleaded with the court to release her because she was the sole breadwinner in her family.

Tanzanian woman clobbers man for not taking pregnant wife to hospital

A Tanzanian woman identified as Esperada Munishi was accused of assaulting a Kenyan man. The man is alleged to have refused to accompany his pregnant wife to hospital within Njiru area.

The complainant, Nickson Onyango, is said to have left his heavily pregnant wife to trek to the hospital for checkup on her own, but she went into labour on her way to the hospital.

Luckily, the accused saved the situation. She reportedly tracked the man and sought to ‘teach him how to treat a pregnant woman.’ She denied the charges and was released on Sh20, 000 cash bail.

 ‘Mapengo’ insult that made woman burn another one’s nyonyo

Betty Nabwire Nakhulo, 52, landed in the dock for allegedly scalding Sarah’s breasts on August 18.

Nakhulo is said to have stormed into the complainant’s house claiming Atieno’s child had called her mapengo.

This is said to have sparked an argument before the accused reached for boiling water on her stove and splashed it on the complainant’s breasts. Nakhulo denied the charges and was set free on Sh100, 000 cash bail.

Son insults mother for giving birth to too many children

A 23-year-old man identified as Denis Kimani was charged with causing disturbance. He was accused of insulting his 54-year-old mother Lucy Muthoni ‘that she has given birth to many children’.

He also reportedly threatened to beat her up after she tried to intervene in a quarrel between Kimani and his wife. Kimani denied the charges.
