Sabunley Secondary School: Where Dida survived dust storms

News
 Sabunley Secondary School

Sabunley Secondary School was established as a harambee school in Barwako, Wajir County in 1978.

The boys’ boarding school, a distance away from the town is situated in a dusty, hot place is one of the popular schools in the county.

Sabunley Secondary School, nicknamed “Samba Boys”, has over the years expanded, with student population reaching 800 learners. Today it has four streams per class.

Besides academic record in the Northern Kenya region, Samba Boys has performed well in co-curricular activities, especially soccer, handball and volleyball in which they have emerged as regional champions.

Since its establishment, Sabunley has been headed by 14 principals, the longest serving having been with the school for 10 years. Samba Boys has produced notable personalities, some serving in the region, at national level and overseas.

It was here that 2013 presidential contender Abduda Dida, incumbent Wajir West MP Ahmed Mohamed and his predecessor Abdikadir Ahmed, endured scorching heat and unending dust. The area’s climate is blistering forcing the school management to embark on a tree-planting project to alleviate the heat.

Dida went back to Sabunley as a teacher before shifting to local secondary schools and later Lenana and Nairobi School before resigning.

Wajir County Assembly clerk Abdullahi Bashir, Center for Research and Innovation Executive Director Billow Hassan Abdi, Mandera County Referral Hospital Chief Rehabilitation Officer Dr. Hussein Roble and Girl Child Network Project Officer Hussein Abdi were all moulded here.

Those guided by “Seek Self Success” motto include Wajir County Government Chief Officer office of Governor Abdullahi Maalim, National Social Security Fund manager Hadi Warfa and Arid Lands Development Focus Kenya programme Officer Ahmed Othoway.

Others who wore black trousers and light-blue shirts include Barclay’s Bank accountant Mohamed Abdullahi, UK-based Chartered Certified Accountant Omar Dida and Water and Sewer Distributors of America Wash Officer Issa Sheikh Mohamed.

Those who retired in Waso, Athi, Niger, Zambezi, Tana and Complex dormitories include National Disaster Management Authority consultant Abdihakim Hared who was Samba’s Student Welfare Chairman, Skövde Värmeverk (District heating plant) in Sweden operational Engineer Abdi Bashir and East African Gasoil Financial Investment Management Professional Operation Manager Muzzamil Mohamed.
