Police have found the decomposed remains of 11 babies in the ceiling of a closed funeral home in Detroit.
Officers were alerted to the discarded remains after an anonymous letter was sent to the local council, detailing where the bodies were hidden.
Nine of the 11 bodies were found stored in single a cardboard box along with a small casket stored inside a compartment in the roof of the Cantrell Funeral Home.
The remains were of infants and still-borns - some of which have been identified, according to police.
Sniffer dogs were deployed to the location but no more bodies were found.
Detective Brian Bowser of Detroit Police said: “We have to find out what happened and why it happened.”
The former funeral home was forcibly closed in April for deplorable conditions regarding decomposing and mouldy bodies.
The site was undergoing renovations to become a community centre when the discovery was made.
The investigation is ongoing.
