A family in Bomet County shocked mourners when they served cake during their granny’s burial.
The deceased, Rebecca Cherono Taprogoi Rop, 112, was buried at Taboino village in a ceremony that attracted hundreds of residents last week.
Speaking to The Nairobian, his son, Joseph Soi, said the cake, which cost Sh17, 000, was to celebrate their mother, who lived a full life and didn’t suffer from any illness.
“We decided to send her that way, not only because of her age, but also to thank God because she never fell sick. In fact, she was only admitted once to hospital,” he said.
The family had also agreed not to cry at the funeral since it was a celebration.
“She was strong. Her daily meal was traditional veggies and she preferred to eat cold ugali in the morning instead of bread. She used to advise young women in the village to breastfeed their kids at least for two years, saying that was the secret to keeping their children healthy”.
Cherono was a freedom fighter and was associated with the Mau Mau. She was eulogised as a ‘woman with a big heart’.
“She took part in the fight for independence with Mau Mau. She was among the first occupants around this village. She was the oldest resident in this area,” a county staff who attended the burial said.
The deceased was a diehard reggae fan and loved the traditional musarek brew.
