A 30-year-old woman was charged with stealing a baby at Nairobi’s Pumwani Hospital.
The suspect, identified as Mercy Atieno Ochieng, a teacher, allegedly stole a one-day-old baby on August 31.
The court heard that the baby’s rightful mother, Rebecca Kasya Ayiro, had stepped out, leaving her baby unattended at the ward late in the evening.
She returned minutes later to find her baby missing. Alarmed, she informed the nurse-in-charge who raised the alarm immediately.
The nurse-in-charge is said to have rushed to the main gate to inform the guards.
Police said that one of the guards stopped the suspect at the main gate minutes after the baby went missing.
Police said the guard became suspicious after he heard cries of a baby coming from a laptop bag the suspect was carrying.
In her defence, police said, the suspect claimed it was her phone’s ringtone. The guard was however not convinced, and so sought to have her frisked at the reception.
Police said the guards found a baby stuffed in the laptop bag.
The suspect was arrested and handed over to police. She, however, denied the charges in court and was released on Sh200, 000 cash bail or surety bond of Sh300,000.
The case is set to begin on November 26.
