Homa Bay Town MP who once presented his payslip in court indicating that he was earning nothing after deductions, has declared that Kenyan MPs are broke.

Hon Peter Kaluma explained that even though being called mheshimiwa sounds prestigious, he is certain that most MPs could be taking home a paltry Sh1, 000 at the end of the month.

According to the MP, “most waheshimiwa have committed their salaries on mortgages and other loans” and are generally broke.

“Besides the mortgages, loans and taxation, you will realise that most of us earn Sh1, 000 and below,” claimed Kaluma.

Kaluma argues that other elected leaders like MCAs are also in the same boat since “MCAs also took car loans and I have information that most of them earn zero salaries.”

The MP is now calling for a lifestyle audit at the county level.

Kaluma expressed concern over the lavish lifestyles of some elected leaders in the county. Speaking when he toured development projects at Kuja Secondary School in his constituency, Kaluma said the elected leaders in the county must have their sources of funds investigated.

“I am astonished by the fact that some elected leaders spend so much money that is not commensurate to what they earn,” said Kaluma.

He singled out some MCAs who “would hike lifts from our vehicles during campaigns but are now driving expensive vehicles. Lifestyle audit needs to be done here.”

He said the audit should begin with the governor, his deputy, the senator the MPs to the MCAs in the county.
