A Kenyan man who surprised the world in 2002 when he offered 40 goats and 20 cows for Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former US President Bill Clinton’s hand in marriage.

Godwin Chepkurgor, caused a stir while in college when he wrote and dispatched a letter to Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton informing them that he had interest in their daughter.

But the most interesting aspect of the letter was his referee.

He had included former President Moi, nominated senator Zipporah Kittony, former MP Prof Margaret Kamar and two of his former college mates John Tanui and Joseph Siror.

Cheeky proposal

In 2006, a few years after his cheeky proposal, Chepkurgor married his college mate Grace Chepkurgor at Kabarak University Chapel on December 2.

They were blessed with four children, but he always promised friends he would  keep tabs on Chelsea.

Some people viewed his proposal as taking a joke too far but he maintained that he was honest and serious about the issue.

However, despite the decision to get married, Chepkurgor maintained his sights and even offered to review his proposal in 2009 asking Chelsea to become his second wife.

In an interview with BBC’s Network Africa programme, Chepkurgor said his wife knew about the proposal and did not object to it.  He maintained his offer of 40 goats and 20 cows as dowry.

Although many viewed the matter as a prank, Mrs Clinton was faced with the same question while on a visit to Kenya in 2009. The then Secretary of State promised to pass on the message to her daughter.

In another interview with renowned CNN host Fareed Zakaria in the same year, Clinton termed the offer not bad, but added that her daughter was her own person.

Mr Chepkugor was then a fourth-year student at Moi University, but was bold enough and made his intentions clear by expressing the desires of his heart.

He was killed by a stray elephant in 2014.
