That there is an influx of street beggars, families and hawkers in the city of Nairobi is not in doubt.
What is puzzling Grapevine however is the emergence of a new breed of street boys who are not just content with begging.
One such street boy, based along Kenyatta Avenue, is known for demanding a newspaper from passers-by in the evening.
The boy is so persistent that one is tempted to believe that he is actually hungry for news and knowledge.
But while he is civil in quenching his thirst for news, the other street boys have literally taken over main streets on weekends.
They mostly ply their trade on Sundays when they target and attack women on their way to and from church.
One such gang is now operating near the General Post Office (GPO) area.
