Peponi School, a mixed day and boarding facility sitting on 45 acres off the Thika Superhighway, was established to provide British curriculum in 1989.

It is among the classy and costly private schools in Kenya, considering full-time boarders fork about Sh600,000 per term, weekly boarders pay around Sh550,000, while day bags are charged Sh400,000 termly.

Peponi (meaning heaven, is a nirvana of sorts, with meals rivalling what you can find in five-star hotels.

Students are allowed to carry cell phones, albeit with set guidelines for their use, and jewellery is part of the dress code, mostly for girls. Boys are permitted to wear one bracelet, but no earrings or studs.

Sports disciplines here, besides the kawaida games, include kayaking, callanetics (stretching and contracting exercise) and roller-blading.

Flying classes are also offered with instructors being former Royal Air Force and later KQ pilots. The school also has UN model competitions.

Notable alumni who are still guided by the motto ‘Hadi Upeoni’ (to the utmost) include ambassador Yvonne Khamati, Kenya’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Nick Muigai Kenyatta, President Uhuru’s nephew who runs an international entertainment agency in Kenya.

Then there is Miano Muchiri, a Capital FM presenter and founder of the Straw Hat movement, Miss Karun Mungai, a former vocalist with Camp Mulla, Christina Mati, a pilot and instructor at 43 Air School in South Africa, and Monica Mbugua, a South Africa based lawyer.

Others who wore navy-blue jackets, white shirts, blouses and navy-blue trousers and skirts include Asim Shah, founder of Greener Pastures Ltd and CEO of Tarpo Industries and one of Kenya’s ‘Top 40 Under 40’ in 2015 and 2016, Sophia Spyropoulos, the GM at Nigel Archer Safaris & Naibor Camps Ltd, Balmoi Abe, the founder of the Cave Ltd and Gyft Bryon (VJ Gyvt) of Phurlife Entertainment

Other Peponians include Robin Agagliate, a design and engineering consultant at Savi Concept, former Carole Mandi Media stylist, Evelyn Mungwe, Uganda’s Cavendish University vice-chancellor Josephine Mayanja, Seven Wonders Safaris director Liz Njuguna and Pippa Strong, the regional sales manager at Abercrombie & Kent Africa.
