I will not resign, IEBC Chairman declares as he invites DPP to conduct investigations

News
 Chairman Wafula Chebukati

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has stated that he would not resign following the ruling by the Supreme Court on the petition by the National Super Alliance (NASA).

Speaking at a presser at Anniversary Towers, Mr Chebukati stated that the Court did not rule on his tenure at the electoral body and he would not resign.

“No, the Supreme will give its judgement in 21 days, we are urging them to give us the judgement as soon as possible. In that judgement there are certain things they will give us about errors what happened during the last election.

So whoever was part of that election will have to take responsibility, as for now, I listened to the Supreme Court judgement and I didn’t hear anything about the chairman in regard to the last election,” said Chebukati

The chairman stated that they as the 2nd respondents in the case had noted the three grounds that the supreme court had used to arrive at the ruling.

He said that focus was on transmission and not on the voting process and that the will of the people was respected.

Chebukati highlighted that the new commissioners only took office seven months ago without any changes to the secretariat.

The Chair invited the DPP to investigate and prosecute any member of staff that might have been involved in electoral offences.

Chebukati further urged the Judges to issue the full judgment expeditiously to allow them to have a full understanding of the area of focus as they prepare the timetable for the next election.

He finally urged Kenyans to remain calm and refrain from political rhetoric that might undermine the integrity and cohesion of the country.
