Catholic Archbishop John Cardinal Njue has cautioned parents against demanding unreasonable bride prices for their daughters.
Speaking during the Family Day at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Nairobi, Cardinal Njue accused fathers of being a major hindrance for young people seeking to wed, saying unreasonable bride price demands ended up destroying many relationships.
Njue recounted an incident where the church was forced to intervene when a father-in-law called off a wedding demanding to be paid Sh250,000 as bride price.
According to the cardinal, the young man involved cancelled the wedding a few weeks to the big day.
“When I asked why the change of heart, the young man told me that the father-in-law was demanding Sh250,000 before the wedding could proceed,” recounted the cardinal.
The cardinal appealed to fathers not to be obstacles to their daughters’ marital happiness and instead encourage and foster happy marriages.
He also urged Kenyans to pray for the country during the ongoing electioneering period.
“All the developments women, men and youth have done for this church were never done on the basis of where one comes from, all communities are represented here, the same should be replicated in our country,” he said.
