Directed by celebrated video producer Moses Osidiana of Brainworks Film, Number One, the love ballad that brought Le Band to the fore early this year is full of sexual undertones and awesome choreographic art. It’s like a fresh aroma, a lovers’ charm that works up the romantic magic.
And now, this four-man crew of Fidel Eli Shammah aka Captain Charisma, Ken Mwendwa aka Man, Abraham Kiptanui aka Winchester and Joel Maina is the new talk of town. Their new hit For You has heads banging.
With the new track released, they are defining themselves as the new music love ambassadors. Passionately, they have taken the R&B genre and embraced it as their key to stardom.
“For You is about showing love to a friend or a partner especially during the hard times. The song is not limited to intimate relationships as seen in the video. It can be your friends or folks... literally anyone,” says Le Band.
“We are loving the fact that people are already relating to it, which was our goal,” they note.
Just like in their other well-known songs Sweet Paradise, Kantai and Heartbeat to my Soul, they chose to return the good old loving funky feeling in their songs. This has made them stick out because other new age love songs are glorifying bumping, grinding and one-night stands, sexual innuendoes that make the songs real groovy.
Fidel is a vocalist and songwriter, Ken plays the bass and vocals arrangement. Abraham is a guitarist and also a vocalist and Joel does the keyboard.
It is no surprise that just like other big artistes, the fast-rising boy band started out officially in church when they realised they could do something other than just harmonise gospel songs and sing hymns.
“One thing for sure is that we are Christian entertainers. We talk about secular aspects in life but we still work in the light. We recognise that our art and talent is God-given. Besides, as Christians we do not have to be gospel artistes. You just have to be genuine in the way you act and let that speak through your music,” they argue.
Everything about this collective of talented youngsters is nothing but magical and things falling into place as the members jell their art. Now that there is a WhatsApp group for everything, they formed a WhatsApp group for the four of them and called it Le band and the name stuck. That is how they came to being.
“Working with a lady, Suzziah, in Number One was something different for us as we are used to working alone as a band. With her, we had to be patient and figure sensitive ways of dealing with the lyrical aspect of the song. We had to apply a balancing act so as not to come out sounding sexist or plain rude,” they recollect.
This year, they have attributed their success to Number One, which brought the spotlight on them. In the first two weeks that the song came out, they had quite the tight schedule; going from one interview to another. This has lined things out for them and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
You would think that with times changing they must have such liberal parents who let them take up music as a career from the get go. Each has had their fair share of having to literally fight for their passion. The extreme case however is when they had a show and Joel had to jump over the gate to make it to the event because that is how seriously they took their career in music.
About Number One, which lived up to its title on, YouTube, leading radio stations and TV entertainment shows, they never quite expected the reactions they received.
“The most unexpected support was mostly from our parents. Finally, they were coming around. The best thing so far is making our parents proud, which is not an easy thing especially if you are doing something they do not really approve of from the start,” they remark.
