Residents of Kilimani want Nairobi City County government to close down shops created by knocking ‘holes’ through house walls.
They sought the intervention of enforcement officers, saying it was becoming a norm for some residents neighbouring roads to create shop windows from their bedrooms and sitting rooms.
The trend, they said, was not only illegal, but also cheapened the suburb.
“Kilimani is becoming another ugly estate with hole-in-the-wall shops sprouting everywhere. We can’t tolerate this. City Hall must close them down,” said Carol Wahome, a resident.
Residents said such shops were also becoming bases for illegal dealings and unholy gatherings.
Under Kilimani Rising Street Reclamation Project, residents urged the county to start a crackdown on such shops, especially along Cotton Avenue.
Residents met senior county officials from the environment, enforcement and liquor licensing departments to discuss noise pollution issues and fading status of the neighbourhood.
