Nostalgia: When Omeras ferried TV, fridge to and from shagz

It was a common spectacle back in the days, when ‘Baba Gidi’ called the shots, to see our brothers and sisters from the lakeside ferrying entire households items back to Kanyam Kago village during the holidays.

A whole house could be emptied for the duration of a school holiday, and akina Opondo, our neighbours along Juja Road in Nairobi’s Eastlands, were notorious for going to shagz with everything: the sofa set, pressure stove, beds, wardrobe kabati, karai and the most hilarious item, the black and white Great Wall television set that came in one colour to reflect Red China where it was manufactured.

Funny how akina Opondo had no electricity in shagz, but still carried their Great Wall and its kitambaa ya mauzi!

To create the impression that it was a coloured set, akina Opondo had an extra screen attached to it and which showed colour, but not quite as today’s colour TVs.

Anyway, akina Opondo teamed up with akina Suji across the street when going shagz via the Country Bus Station and it never made sense why akina Suji also carried their fridge and they came from the same village as akina Opondo.

Just the same way akina Opondo never understood why we, Okuyus, boiled the Tilapia they gave us as gifts upon their return!
