Winners Girls High School in Keringet, Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, was established in 2012 by Dutch philanthropist, Piet de Peut, specifically to nurture athletic talent.

The school that is about 70 kilometres from Nakuru town has in four years churned out some of Kenya’s finest runners.

Winners Girls currently has 120 students, and some in its special athletic talent programme, are allowed to train while still ‘chewing’ books. Alumni of the school have fond memories of the special diet the school, led by Principal Marylyn Lasoi, offered them for supper — ugali kienyeji washed down with fresh milk, daily.

According to Lasoi, a member of the Athletics Kenya national youth sub-committee, the menu is behind the prowess of her ex-students, notable among them Faith Kipyegon, who last week won the women’s 1,500m gold at the  2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, beating world champion and record holder Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia. Faith cleared last year and was greatly urged by Lasoi to specialise in the 1,500m.

Other alumni guided by the motto ‘Education for Talent’ include; Mercy Chebwogen, the 2011 World Junior champion in the 3,000m, and Jackline Chepng’eno, the silver medalist at this year’s  20th Africa Senior Athletics Championships held in Durban, South Africa.

Others who wore green skirts and sweaters, white blouses and green ties with white stripes include Joyline Cherotich, bronze medalist at the World Youth Championships in 2015 in Colombia, and Rosefline Chepng’etich, the 2013 World Youth 3,000m steeplechase champion.
