Public display of affection is one thing that is cropping into our society currently. Many young couples are opting to make up and kiss their partners publicly.
Couples no longer do this in their house only; they have taken the behavior outside.
Long ago, it was a taboo to be seen shaking a ladies hand in public, let alone hugging them. But in this digital era PDA has become the in thing. If you are not doing it then you are analogue. The young couples are really embracing this new trend. But why all of a sudden have people decided to air out their love for their partners in the public?
It is mainly because of the movies and soap operas we watch. What the youth and the young couples are trying to do is to emulate the Western people. But what we forget is that we are Africans. We have our own cultural and traditional believes. Kissing and making up publicly is seen as moral decay in the African culture and society.
In as much as PDA is a way to show to your partner that you love them, and that they are the only ones, there are some issues we should take into consideration before doing so.
When you are kissing publicly, do you care to know who is next to you? Who is seeing you? Are they comfortable with what you are doing? And if it is around elderly people, is it respectful to be doing it in their presence?
What about the kids around, what are we showing them? I know someone will argue that children are used to seeing this on Tvs. But seeing it on television and seeing people doing it before you are two different things. When children see this, their morals are going to decay further.
Public display of affection should not be embraced. I know ladies love it when their men caress and kiss them publicly, but let’s be realistic here. Let us respect those around us. If you want to kiss, caress, and make up with your partner do it in the house or a closed room. It’s not that display of affection is bad, but it should just not be done in public.
