Movie Review - The Perfect Guy

News
Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut and Michael Ealy star in Screen Gems' THE PERFECT GUY.

At first glance The Perfect Guy looks like your everyday run of the mill chic flick, maybe it’s because the lead characters are famous for acting in movies that revolve around love and comedy, but the film’s theme turns out to be a surprise especially if you have not seen the trailer.

The film’s story begins when successful lobbyist Leah (Sanaa Lathan) and her boyfriend of two years, Dave (Morris Chestnut) break up after they are unable to agree on when to start a family.

Shortly thereafter Leah has a casual encounter with a handsome stranger, Carter (Michael Ealy), at a coffee shop, and he leaves an impression on her. A couple of weeks later they meet up at a bar and it seems like the stars have aligned and the couple are destined for happy- ever- after.

A relationship quickly ensues, but everything changes when Carter suddenly erupts into rage and nearly beats a man to death at a gas station for the offense of talking to her. Leah sees him in a new light and begins to back away from the relationship. When she breaks it off entirely, Carter is revealed as a raving psycho who will stop at nothing to get her back.

Thumbs Down

It’s so perfectly predictable that some parts may have you giggling instead of screaming, and you know you have a problem because the film is not a comedy. The Perfect Guy fumbles, it never tries to be anything more than the usual stalker-boyfriend genre. It is not a new story; you have seen it a thousand times before.

Thumbs Up

It has a few scary moments here and there, and I can’t complain about the eye candy, it is quite the visual feast.

Verdict

It is perfect for a slow Saturday when you are plotless!
