There are two famous ‘precious blood’ schools in Kenya: One is in Riruta, the other in Kilungu, Makueni County. Both are Catholic sponsored under the Missionaries of the Precious Blood who came to Kenya, first at Bura, in 1909.

Precious Blood, Kilungu was founded as a mission in 1940 before an intermediate school was established six years later. It remained so for 15 years when it became a secondary school in 1961, the year it adopted the name, Precious Blood Secondary - Kilungu. Students then sat for the British Cambridge system.

The school grew steadily, thanks to the Harambee spirit of the 1970s and 1980s. Most of these fundraisers were graced by retired President Daniel arap Moi

The fame of Precious Blood schools rests on academic exploits, but Kilungu also has excelled in German cultural festivals (and German is offered as course), the President’s Award Scheme and essay writing competitions.

The school where long serving principal, Sr Mary Engelberta Frohlich, retired in 2004 after 15 years, has something else that’s specific to it: cleanliness.

It was not just next to Godliness, it was a life skill. So thorough was the school in the usafi department that students scrubbed walls with steel wool!

Unlike other schools, manual work was not a punishment, and countless alumni have fond memories of the friendly teachers - just why it has one of the best old girl associations that still raise money for bursaries since it was founded in 1990.

Notable alumni who wore white blouses, well-ironed grey pleated skirts and maroon sweaters while singing ...as together, we are one from the school anthem include Makueni Deputy Governor Adelina Mwau; Ambassador Prof Judith Mbula Bahemuka; Dr Margaret Ngau, CEO of Allied Technical IT, Margaret Saitoti; director at National Oil Corporation and Educational psychologist; and Dr Philomena Ndambuki of Kenyatta University School of Education.

Another notable alumnus who was guided by the motto, ‘Education for Service,’ is Dr Martina Mutheu, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi’s School of Journalism and founder of M-ASCA (Mobile Accumulating Savings and Credit Association).
