Movie: World War Z

Movie Buffs

World War Z

Director: Marc Foster.

Cast: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesw, Fana Mokoena and Abigail Hargrove.

Genre: Horror/ Thriller.

Run Time: 1hr and 55 min.

Verdict: 7/10.

It has been a while since Brad Pitt acted in a blockbuster, over the last five years or more the star has opted for more artsy movies with more Oscar-oriented themes as opposed to going the commercial way, but finally the star is back as the leading man in the zombie movie of 2013.

In World War Z Brad Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, a former UN military officer who has given up his job to help his wife Karen (Mireille Enos) raise their two young daughters played by Abigail Hargrove and Sterling Jerins. However, when a zombie epidemic breaks out in the city, Gerry and his family get caught up in the madness but manage to escape when Gerry’s former boss, played by Fana Mokoena, airlifts them to safety.

With his family safely aboard an aircraft carrier, Gerry is asked to accompany a mission to identify the source of the zombie outbreak, a journey that takes him to South Korea, Israel and finally Wales in an attempt to save his family and world from the deadly zombie epidemic.

Thumbs Up Brad Pitt is great as the leading man, he delivers a reliably solid performance as Gerry, and literally carries the film on his shoulders, as the supporting cast does not get much film time. The film also has remarkable set pieces, especially the zombie attacks that go on throughout the film.

Thumbs Down

It begins with a great pace and with an introduction that packs the right punches, but somewhere in the middle it loses a sense of direction and pace. The films biggest flaw however is the fact that it is all about Brad Pitt’s character, the rest of the cast are not given room or time to shine and are more of a tag-along for the star. The film thus fails to connect on an emotional level because you only really get to know one character’s story.

Verdict If all you want is well constructed and choreographed zombie attacks, a little suspense here and there and do not care much for an emotional punch, this is definitely the film for you.
