Freshlyground deported for mocking ‘Uncle Bob’ in Harare

Heads Up

Music group Freshlyground

Popular music group Freshlyground were on May 3, deported from Zimbabwe for mocking Robert Mugabe in 2010. They were due to stage the closing performance at the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA).

The group, which is made up of South Africans, Zimbabweans and Mozambicans was turned away at the Harare International Airport soon after their flight from Johannesburg landed in the afternoon.

No reasons were given for the deportation. In 2010 the group was banned from staging a show in Harare, days after they released their ‘Chicken to Change’ video mocking President Robert Mugabe for hanging on to power.

The song urges Mugabe to “become the hero he used to be” by stepping down.

The video is featured ZANEWSTV, a South African online hub of satirical multimedia content. The puppet shows mostly mock South African president Jacob Zuma and his leadership.
