Elizabeth Akinyi etched her name into Nyanza Golf Club's history books after triumphing in the October Mug of the Month, edging out over 70 other golfers on the scenic 9-hole course at the lakeside club.
Nestled on the shores of Lake Victoria, Nyanza Golf Club's breathtaking views and tranquil ambiance set the perfect stage for Akinyi's triumphant journey.
Taking advantage of the picturesque layout and cool lakeside breeze, Akinyi crafted a remarkable round, finishing with an impressive 65 net to claim the overall winner’s trophy.
“It took a lot of patience and focus to get here,” Akinyi shared with a smile. “The competition was tough, but I kept my head down and trusted my game. Winning this prize is truly rewarding.”
Each swing and putt mattered in the close-fought contest, as competitors from various categories strove for glory.
Among them, Griffins Owino took top honors in Division 1, scoring a 68 net, while Patricia Odima closely followed as the 1st Runner-Up in the same category with a 71 net.
Dr. William Jimbo emerged as the Division 2 champion, posting a 70 net, while Bupendra S. Patel was Division 2's 1st Runner-Up, also at 71 net.
In Division 3, Clifford Agumbi captured victory with a 69 net, while Dr. Shem Rakewa matched the 71 net score to secure the Runner-Up position.
The October Babie title, a special category for those born in the month, went to Tom Agumbi with a score of 72 net, while Ameet Shah came in as the Runner-Up, finishing at 76 net.
The tournament also celebrated senior and guest categories. Bupendra V. Patel was crowned Best Senior with a commendable 72 net, while Kiptoo Koech emerged as the Guest Winner with a 66 net, closely followed by Paul Njenga, the Guest Runner-Up, with 72 net.
Melody Ushuda clinched the Best Junior title with a 79 net, showcasing impressive skill among the younger participants.
The Mug of the Month didn’t just focus on overall net scores but also highlighted achievements on specific holes.
Prof. Herrick Othieno claimed the 1st Nine with a 34 net, while Sally Hawi dominated the 2nd Nine with an outstanding 30 net.
Notable moments came from the Longest Drive competition, where Maurice Oduor claimed the men’s title, and Tabitha Ojwang took the ladies’ honor.
Israel Agina received a special mention for Best Effort, wrapping up the award ceremony with an 88 net.
Tom Odongo, the Nyanza Golf Club captain, lauded the players and sponsors for making the tournament a success.
“It’s always a pleasure to see our members and visitors come together for events like these. This tournament was special, as it was sponsored by members who were born in October, along with generous support from Braeburn Group of International Schools Kisumu, Kenya Breweries Kisumu, and several others,” Odongo stated. “Their contributions helped us create a memorable experience for everyone involved.”
