About 50 middle-aged men underwent free vasectomy in Nairobi as the world marked World Vasectomy Day on November 18.
The fourth event held in Africa for the first time since its launch in 2013 was a record breaker of vasectomies conducted in a single day in one event. It was hosted at Kenya National Theatre.
Fifteen more others had taken the operation since it kicked off on November 15, and more had registered to undergo the surgical procedure according to Jonathan Stack, founder of World Vasectomy Day.
“In Kenya, family planning is much focused on women who are receptive, but vasectomy uptake was remarkable. I too was anxious when I went for it some years back,” said Stack.
Five doctors, including a lady, worked tirelessly to serve the hordes of men who turned up for the operation in Nairobi, a majority of them aged between 30 and 40 years. The procedure was conducted inside two blind screened cubicles on the theater’s stage that concurrently hosted debates and live streaming interviews from abroad.
