The act of a woman pushing a baby through the pelvis, what is known as delivery, is the most traumatic activity the human body can go through, scientists have said.
Ideally, a new mother is expected to have recovered from birth trauma in about 6 weeks.
A team of researchers have however found out that quite a sizable number are not able to resume normal life within that time. Dr Janis Miller, associate professor at the University of Michigan, is quoted by Mail Online saying some women take eight months or longer to heal from pelvic injuries incurred at childbirth.
Dr Miller led a team of midwives, radiologists and obstertricians at the University in studying pregnant women who were high risk for pelvic muscle tears and concluded that what expectant mothers go through cant even be compared to the rigors of extreme sports.
“A woman may have bladder problems, and in some cases prolapse of organs if the pelvic muscles are not functioning well enough to hold them in place,” Miller said.
The Michigan team further found that even Kegel exercises, usually prescribed post birth, don’t helpmuch to attach pelvic muscles to the pubic bone.
