An MP has blamed romance and boda boda businesses for poor performance in some schools in his constituency.
Tigania East MP Josphat Gichunge told students in secondary schools to stop wasting valuable education time in romance and writing love letters, and instead focus on their studies.
Speaking at St Angelas Girls Secondary School in Muthara during an education forum for the subcounty, Gichunge said many boys in secondary schools waste a lot of time writing love letters to their girlfriends and end up failing in their collective role of raising education standards in the constituency.
The MP’s utterances caused amusement in the forum that was also attended by Deputy County Commissioner for Tigania East Lawrence Kinyua. Gichunge noted that the boy child was performing poorly due to distraction by girls
While calling upon parents and teachers to play their roles in education, the MP regretted that the sub-county performed the poorest in the 2017 national examinations in Meru County.
He attributed the poor performance to poor leadership that was there before and which he claims was not committed to promoting education.
