A political aspirant for the Embakasi Parliamentary seat has been charged with threatening to kill his opponent.
Police allege that Stephen Maina Waruinge, an independent candidate, threatened to kill Francis Mureithi Wambugu, a Jubilee aspirant in the same area.
The accused, who is brother of former Mungiki leader Ndura Waruinge, allegedly committed the offense on April 19, 2017 at Lacastle Club within Nairobi County, jointly with others not before the court.
Waruinge is said to have told Mureithi that “Hata Mugabe Were alishinda hii kiti lakini hakukalia”, words which are allegedly meant to threaten to kill.
The prosecution opposed his release on bail claiming the accused was arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant on May 28, 2017, and that the investigating officer is still investigating the matter.
The complainant’s lawyer maintained that the words uttered were directed to his client, adding that suspect was a flight risk given the seriousness of the case.
Waruinge was released on Sh500,000 cash bail or a bond of Sh 500,000 plus two sureties of similar amount.
