Kayole residents have identified seven places in the sprawling estate where incidents of street crime, particularly snatching of mobile phones, have increased alarmingly.
Areas which have been declared hot spots for mobile phone snatching include Masimba, Stage 17, Rasta, Matopeni, Saba Saba, Soweto, Mihang’o, Corner, Saika and Nyando.
Residents believe that with the identification of the “hot spots,” the area police will have it easy curbing the menace by effective patrolling the said spots.
“We are under siege in this estate, and if things don’t change, I will be forced to relocate to a safer places,”says Pauline Wanjiku, whose phone and handbag were snatched at Mihang’o a few minutes after 6pm.
Another victim, Linet Njoroge, a teacher in one of the school’s in Soweto, has blamed the police for sleeping on the job.
“People are mugged everywhere here. Theft has become normal and part of our society because it happens on a daily basis,” she says.
“The safest place to receive or make a phone call in Kayole is in the church or police station. Any other place is risky,” says Eric Chagame, also a resident.
When reached for comment, Kayole OCPD Joseph Gichangi, told The Nairobian that, “We are doing everything possible to deal with petty thieves in Kayole. This will soon be a thing of the past,” he said.
