An event to mark the unveiling of a city road named after the late Catholic Cardinal Maurice Otunga kicked off without prayers preceding the ceremony.
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Cardinal John Njue unveiled the road which is off Muindi Mbingu Street near City Hall Annexe.
A Catholic choir danced and belted out hymns before the county leaders and Catholic clergy, but prayers were not slotted until mid-way through the event.
Church faithful, county staff and members of public watched silently, some murmuring, “Were we not supposed to start with prayers?”
The road was supposed to be unveiled on November 3 together with two others renamed after Nairobi’s first Mayor Charles Rubia and the late Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Wangari Maathai.
A Church official told The Nairobian that the delay was due to Cardinal Njue’s tour abroad.
“He jetted back on November 21,” said an official.
Cardinal Njue said the beatification of Cardinal Otunga was at advanced stages besides immortalising him as “more than a memory. He is a moral icon”.
