Governor aspirant Mabel Muruli is the new Miss Money Bags in Kakamega

Mabel’s dream of becoming the first governor of Kakamega in 2013 elections was shattered by the electoral body on the grounds that her degree was not recognised by the Commission for University Education.

Move over Livondo, there is a new loaded person in town. The latest entrant for the Kakamega governorship seat has left tongues wagging. She is eyeing to unseat Wycliffe Oparanya in the 2017 General Election.

Mabel Muruli, a UK-based businesswoman with a purse that seemingly has no bottom, recently made an impromptu visit to Kakamega town where many boda boda operators closed business after a day in the office with Mabel.

Bernard Oundo, the chair of Kakamega Traders Association clarified that, “We were given Sh30,000 and not Sh300,000 as was claimed.”

Mabel’s dream of becoming the first governor of Kakamega in 2013 elections was shattered by the electoral body on the grounds that her degree was not recognised by the Commission for University Education.

“I am back and I am going to vie for the governorship of Kakamega County. I was told that some politicians were saying that I will not declare my interest for the seat again. I want to tell them that I am in the race,” said Muruli, adding that, “In 2013, they knew I was a threat so they went all over the county propagating all manner of lies about me. They said I did not have academic credentials. I have acquired enough degrees, so let them prepare for battle.”

Muruli moved to the High Court where she was given the green light to contest but she was still locked out. She went back to the High Court to nullify Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya’s election, claiming that she was unlawfully barred from contesting even after the court had ordered that she be allowed to take part in the election.

The Supreme Court later threw out Muruli’s application after judges ruled that the applicant had not complied with the constitutional provisions on election petitions.

“There is no seat in politics that is for men only. I am in the race to the end because I have the will and purpose,” said the businesswoman. She called on other women to come out and support her bid.

However, her ‘money show’ in ‘Kach’ left traders counting losses and nursing injuries after rowdy youth invaded the town. They have since warned those salivating for political positions not to bring campaigns to their premises.

Western Region Police Commander Moses Ombati warned all aspirants against early campaigning, as “we are concerned about what happened and we are not going to take that lightly. Why would somebody cause chaos in town because of handouts?” asked Ombati

Margaret Isanda, one of the traders, accused Muruli of not addressing their concerns, but instead left them counting losses and nursing injuries.

Said Oundo: “We are only asking her to come and foot the medication bill of the victims and pay for the property that was destroyed during the fight.”
