leading multi-media house in Kenya with a key influence in matters of national and
international interest.
Bungoma High School was established as a boys school — a joint venture between former Mt Elgon County Council in and the area District Education Board in Kadunyi Constituency in 1961.
At ‘BG’ as the school is nicknamed, meat was served every time a politician toured the school, but when the students planned to strike over ‘bitter’ ugali they would be calmed with bread.
The school has a bakery and school fees here can be paid in form of beans, maize and bricks. The aging Isuzu school minibus (KXD 420 — pictured) nicknamed ‘Boiler’ had ‘Pato’ Mukabane as its celebrated driver.
That aside, ‘BG’ ranks among the top 100 in national examinations. It also excels in co-curricular activities as is evident in its winning the 2016 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association National 15s Rugby title. ‘BG’ fairs well in football, drama and music contests.
From the initial 39 students, today, the school boasts over 1000 students. Among notable alumni comprise; slain billionaire businessman, Jacob Juma, who was recently murdered along Ngong Road, Nairobi.
Former Kadunyi MP Alfred Khang’ati, Bishop Wilfred Lai of Mombasa’s Jesus Celebration Centre and the late HIV researcher, Prof Job Bwayo spent nights in Jamhuri and Madaraka dormitories.
Webuye West MP Daniel Wanyama honed his prowess in volleyball here and proceeded to be captain of the national men’s volleyball team.
Rugby Sevens’ Michael Wanjala, Davis Chenge and Kenya Women’s Sevens head Coach Mike Shamia chanted the motto ‘Be The Light’ as Image consultant Robert Burale nurtured his talent in acting in ‘BG’ where he was also a head boy.
Other alumni who wore white shirts, green sweaters and black trousers include Dr Khamati Shilabukha, an anthropologist at The University of Nairobi and Wilson Wasike, senior policy expert at The National Treasury.
