Renowned human rights activist, Al Amin Kimathi, tickled a court when he claimed he couldn’t identify his ex-wife, Farida Saad since she was dressed in a hijab.
Kimathi was arraigned in court for allegedly assaulting his ex-wife who is a director at Andalucia Academy in South B on September 9.
He also faces another charge of assaulting Fatuma Ali, the school’s principal, who intervened during their dispute at the school.
According to police, Kimathi who also allegedly damaged school property valued at Sh17,500, had visited the school to pick one of his daughters when they argued with his ex-wife, whom Kimathi, through his lawyer told the court, he could not identify since she was in hijab and was sandwiched between two complainants.
Seeking for deferment of his plea, Kimathi’s lawyer also challenged the prosecution’s failure to indicate the exact time he assaulted the ex-wife and the school’s principal.
In her police statement, Saad claims Kimathi arrived at the school, went to the office where he created disturbance and asked her to surrender his household goods in her house.
Amid the argument, it is alleged Kimathi who had agreed to wait for the ex-wife to conclude the meeting turned violent and started attacking her.
The school’s principal Fatuma Ali told police: “Al Amin came to the school and started having an exchange with his ex who is our staff. When he started shouting, I walked up to them and requested him to take the domestic matter outside the school premises. He punched me in the face and then picked a paper punch and stapler which he used to hit me in the face.”
The court deferred Kimathi’s plea until September 22 when a ruling will be made over the matter.
