Police have been left scratching their heads after thieves mysterious made away with goods worth Sh700,000 from a heavily guarded compound.
The equipment was allegedly stolen from the Bungoma County Commissioner’s compound, which is heavily guarded by administration police. County Commissioner Mohamed Maalim condemned the incident saying officers who were on duty would be held accountable.
“Police officers have a duty to protect government property, and any negligence will not be condoned,” he said.
Maalim confirmed that seven laptops, one projector, eight HDMI cables, a hard disk, one ordinary cable and a monitor had been stolen. He assured affected departments that security personnel would ensure the equipment was recovered.
He confirmed the officers on duty had recorded statements and warned that they risked losing their jobs if found guilty.
He however, said police suspected it to be an inside job.
“How do you take some keys to the police armoury and leave others in yours office,” paused the commissioner.
Departmental heads were left wondering how thieves could have crept into the guarded compound without being caught by security officers. The commissioner asked the public to volunteer information to security officer to help recover the government branded items. He said police are investigating if some officers were part of the robbery plan.
