World Thumb Wrestling Championships involves thumb-to-thumb combat Here, wrestlers do rounds of fierce thumb-to-thumb combat as they seek the world title
Hundreds of people gathered in Suffolk, in the United Kingdom last week for the ninth annual World Thumb Wrestling Championships.
The competitors were from America, Poland, Germany, Australia, India and South Africa, who joined local wrestlers for rounds of fierce thumb-to-thumb combat as they sought the world title.
"The "sport" is based on the popular children's game and is played in rounds on a wooden board resembling a wrestling ring," said the BBC.
The winners were Paul Browse, from Lowestoft, Suffolk who won the men's competition, while Becca Anne, from Gillingham, Norfolk claimed the ladies title.
Thumb Wrestling has grown over the years, with major international events like the Hong Kong Cup which also attracts hundreds of people.
"Part of the unique thrill of thumb wrestling comes from the big personalities that have come to dominate the sport," the games website, www.thumbwrestling.co.uk notes.
